ETN, ESTN, EFSTN TN, STN, FSTN Display with Reflectance Enhancement Film
Special enhancement films can be adopted in our transflective/reflective TN, STN, FSTN display for improved readability and style. The advantages and benefits of adopting the film are as follows:
The standard bottom polarizer is replaced directly by an enhancement film. No transflector/reflector is required which results in reduced LCD thickness and weight.
The reflected brightness is greatly enhanced across the complete viewing angle. ETN, ESTN, EFSTN LCD is readable under low ambient light. This reduces backlight need and hence results in lower power consumption.
For transflective display, optical inversion occurs in backlit mode and images are illuminated, which not only reduces the backlight power requirement, but also provides a unique styling.
Display equipped with transflective enhancement film allows unique styling of colored characters or graphics by using color electroluminescent backlights.

MULTI-COLOR DISPLAY MODULE FOR CELLULAR PHONES AND PAGERS
Varitronix introduces an economical multi-color display known as Color Coded Super Twist Nematic (CCSTN) display which a state-of-the-art multi-color display module with white LED backlight. Its light weight feature with low profile and excellent performance are ideal for mobile phones, graphic pagers and other compact devices. Colors are achieved in CCSTN without the expensive color filters. The color of each pixel is software programmable. User can select up to 4 colors from a palette of 32 colors. Both standard and custom designs are available.
STANDARD CHARACTER & GRAPHIC MODULE IN COG PACKAGING
Chip-on-glass (COG) packating from Varitronix offers high quality, light weight, low profile, low power consumption and low cost display modules. They are widely used in cellular phones and other compact devices. Interface options include 4- or 8-bit parallel, serial or 12C. Display formats include both character and graphic STN in our line of standard modules. Custom COG designs are available.
SILICON BASED MICRODISPLAY
Reflective Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (RAMLCD) is a LCD formed on a single crystal silicon using advanced VLSI technology. Varitronix's RAMLCD technology offers high resolution and high quality microdisplays for a wide range of magnified direct viewing and image projection applications. Examples are smart cellular phone, virtual reality, digital view finder, projector, etc. Presently available models are for XGA (1024 x 768 pixels) and VGA (704 x 576 pixels) display formats. The latter covers most of the popular formats including NTSC & PAL TV, NTSC & PAL MPEG and VGA display. The use of single crystalline silicon enables high degree of integration. Circuits for the row and column drivers, image decoding as well as others can be incorporated onto the silicon --- truly a system-on-chip display. Custom microdisplay services are available.
4-LEVEL GRAY SCALE STN MODULE
Varitronix's gray scale STN display modules offer 4 distinct gray levels to enhance visual impact. The four gray levels (white, light gray, dark gray and black) are software selectable. In-house developed driver circuits enable inexpensive and low power consumption designs. Custom designs are available.
SELECTIVE MULTI-COLOR TN TECHNOLOGY WITH BUILT-IN BLACK MATRIX
This newly developed selective multi-color TN LCD operates in normally black mode. The color coatings and the black matrix are inside the LCD cell. Therefore, it has less parallax and durability problems compared to more conventional designs available in the market. Total number of colors ranges from one to three in addition to the black matrix. Customers can select the color for each segment. No bleaching of colors is observed even when operating at 80oC, ideal for automotive and other outdoor applications. Displays from static to 1/8 multiplex are available.
Limited presently by the supply of flip chips for COG, Varitronix has further developed an ultra slim module with a conventional chip on board (COB) technology. Applying this technology to a proprietary configuration, not only is Varitronix able to offer customers ultra slim modules of thickness not greater than that of the total display (similar to that of COG), but also a wide choice of controllers/drivers is possible. The thinnest possible module is around 1.8mm with a 0.70mm glass per plate. Available samples for evaluation are a 2 line of 16 characters (display of MDLS-16265) module with HD44780/HD44100 or equivalent controller/driver and a character module 4 lines X 12 characters with a PCF2116 driver.
LOW VOLTAGE STN DISPLAY
Varitronix is able to offer STN displays with 16 way multiplexing and 1/3 bias below 3.0V. Drive voltage requirement is only 2.93V at room temperature. The temperature range of operation is from 0 to 50oC. Sample of the display for our module MDLS-16265 is available.
SUPER LOW VOLTAGE TN DISPLAYS
Now available from Varitronix super low voltage TN displays that can be statically driven at a voltage of 1.5V at room temperature. A single 1.5V battery is sufficient and no voltage doubler is required. For higher multiplexing rates, the drive voltage at room temperature are 1.7V, 2.0V and 2.2V for multiplexing rates at 2, 3 and 4 way respectively. The displays are operational between -20oC to 50oC.
HIGHER TWISTED TN DISPLAY (HTN)
STN Displays have a much wider viewing cone in comparison to the TN displays of the same multiplexing ratio. However, due to the tight tolerance of cell gaps required for STN displays, not only expensive polished glasses have to be used but also expensive retardation film is needed to achieve black on white viewing. For multiplex ratio ranging from 3 to 32 way, Varitronix can offer a low cost higher twisted TN displays with a much larger viewing cone than those of normal TN displays whilst retaining a black on white viewing. In addition, HTN has the full advantage of wide temperature of operation typical of a TN display.
WIDE TEMPERATURE FSTN MODULES
Varitronix proudly announces the availability of STN modules with film retardation for wide viewing angle and high black and white contrast capable of functioning from -20oC to
80oC. The modules are available with or without backlight. The total response time at
- 20 oC can be as fast as less than 3 seconds for 16 way multiplexed display and slightly slower response time for higher multiplex duties. Sample available for evaluation is a graphic module MGLSF12864 (128 x 64 dots).
NEW STANDARD PRODUCTS
Available now from Varitronix is a quarter VGA graphic STN Module - MGLS320240E (320 X 240 dots) with or without CCFL backlight.
